Hey local friends, here is something new and fun! Lauren Roth Art at 131 Hekili St. in Kailua is verynearlyalmost open! Maybe you’ve seen my article about Lauren and her new shop in the latest issue of Go Kailua (pgs 42-45). Opening the shop has long been a dream for Lauren and her husband, Jonathan. Tonight was the media launch party, so I got to oooh and aaah over the electric tropical colors splashed across Lauren’s original one-off art, bags, journals, hats, prints, etc while sipping champagne. If that sounds like a good time to you, it will be happening again, but with raffle prizes, sales, and more fun from 4-7pm on Small Business Saturday (24 November).
To read Mariko Merritt‘s kind words about Lauren Roth, you’ll have to pick up Go Kailua Magazine. 🙂 If you feel strangely familiar with her style, it might be because she is the artist for some of our favorite Hawaiian children’s books, including Hush Little Keiki and Island Toes! Odd fact: I met the author of Island Toes one day in Norfolk, Virginia, when she visited the Chrysler Museum of Art while I was hard at work in the glass gallery, before anyone knew we were moving to Hawaii.
Sarah Caudle and Kim Sielbeck started following each other on Instagram. “We should hang out!” they kept telling each other, but it was hard to find time that worked for each of their schedules. Then one day, Kim posted a photo of the view out her window. Sarah had to look twice. “I think I live below you!” It turned out they lived in the same building, just a few floors apart. Now the friends work in a shared studio space.
Lauren’s vision for her shop is to host a rotation of local guest artists. It’s part of her intent to build up the community and interact with local artists and global art fans. So next time you stroll from Whole Foods toward Target, passing Nalo and Island Bungalow, peek in Lauren Roth Art. There’s a good chance she’ll even be in there, paints unfurled, working hard on something beautiful.

Paints unfurled! Such a charming and evocative description; how do you come up with these things!?
