This was a pretty calm year for us! Unusually calm. Good calm. We didn’t move or have a baby or anything! Here’s what stands out in review:
2018
Ballistic missile SNAFU. Beautiful days on the Kaneohe sand bar. Chris deploying. Some rainy months. My parents visited for a second time. More rain. Chris got home. Eloise finished her first year of preschool and Isaac completed kindergarten. Summer fun with friends. Summer fun with Hannah, Justin, Ezekiel, Jane, Ezra and Elisha, and Grandma and Pa. Chris left and came back again, then left again. Pounce almost died but didn’t. The kids started school. Isaac turned seven. We went to Texas on Eloise’s fourth birthday. We came home “to my island” (as Eloise calls it) and Chris came home for good. We all went to Kaua’i together for a weekend. We spent Thanksgiving with friends. Grandfather passed away suddenly. We hosted friends at our house for Christmas.
This year had lots of beach days and long afternoons at the playground. Some tears, lots of hugs and snuggles, millions of books read together at bedtime. Eloise finally stopped taking afternoon naps. She is good at making friends and drawing newcomers and shy kids into the group. Isaac is also making good friends, and discovered Super Mario Brothers, MarioKart, reading on his own, and a particular affinity for Legos.
The kids wildly expanded their list of tolerable foods, they eagerly anticipate Awana, and they love to ask what day it is and plan out the day’s activities.
It hasn’t been perfect, but it’s been pretty amazing. And like they say in Hawaii—no rain, no rainbows.
