Halloween 2012 — Hurricane Isaac |
Chris likes Halloween; I don’t really get it. Or rather I didn’t until this year! Tons of wildly excited kids in totally cute costumes—what’s not to love?! What I don’t get is ‘adult Halloween’ I guess—horrifying or slutty costumes and generally being terrified and having nightmares. No thanks. And while Thanksgiving will remain my favorite holiday, I now understand why people would say they LOOOOOVE Halloween: they have or teach kids. Mystery solved!
Tomorrow, we go to the store in search of more Tootsie-roll Pops… |
Anyway I didn’t figure that out until tonight. But even before this epiphany I’d put some pumpkins on the dining room table, set out the black dishes, and hung a spiderweb-print dishtowel (in addition to all the other fantastic fall decor). OK: spiderwebs, bats, black cats, owls, sticks; the colors black, green, purple, orange. NOT OK: zombies, witches, ghosts, gore. Yuk. Not my thing.
We trick-or-treated with our friends and neighbors over on Thistledown, which Isaac loved! Pretty much anything with lots of kids is something Captain Goodbaby will enjoy. He successfully trick-or-treated 1.5 streets, which consisted of following other kids around and occasionally scoring some candy. He doesn’t walk, and he can’t talk, so if someone gave him some candy, great. And if he crawled over to the bowl, great. But I would have felt a little silly helping myself on his behalf. Isaac was very interested in one house that had really gone all out. Flaming torches lit the path to the door, which opened on its own. Ominous music played, mist swirled, a strobe light flashed. The older boys let their dad go first to the candy bowl inside. Isaac wanted to investigate…he tentatively crawled over the threshold…he thought better of it and scrambled into my arms.
Once it got dark I had to kind of hold Isaac up and explain his costume. One lady said, “Oh good, I thought he was Hurricane Sandy, which would have been in really poor taste.” Agreed. Now we know for next year: pick something obvious for going door-to-door.
Back home at our house the good captain went to bed. We’ve always been in apartments or overseas, so we’ve never had trick-or-treaters before!
1. Hardly anyone said, “trick-or-treat!” ???
2. If someone did, it was usually only the youngest in the party. ???
3. One (older) goblin arrived by himself. I said, “All alone? Sad!” [Awkward pause I totally deserved.] He said, “Happy Halloween….” I hope he doesn’t come smash our pumpkins later tonight.
4. Trivia: Halloween-ish celebrations can be traced back about three thousand years to a day-of-the-dead-type holiday in Celtic Ireland.
5. We got candy we don’t love so we wouldn’t eat it all. Instead we’ll eat Isaac’s. Goodnight, pumpkinheads!
