With the coming of family to San Diego, many eyes in imprisoned Atsugi Base turned hopefully, or desperately, toward the freedom of the Americas. Hickam became the great embarkation point. But not everyone could get to Hickam directly, and so a tortuous, roundabout refugee trail sprang up. Yamato to Astugi Air Terminal. Across the Pacific to Kadena. Then by plane, or auto, or port across the Ring of Fire to Kadena in Okinawa. Here, the fortunate ones through money, or influence, or luck, might obtain exit visas and scurry onto a Space A flight to Hickam, and from Hickam to the New World. But the others must wait in Casablanca. And wait. And wait. And wait.
