This monk practiced calligraphy in a temple just off the main drag through Ueno Park, and we arrived at the Tokyo National Museum to a performance of modern taiko drumming and koto music celebrating the opening of the Year of the Tiger exhibit. The museum was everything we’d hoped for in a national museum of Japan. I liked all the woodblock prints and the ancient tea ceremony items; Chris was satiated on samurai armor and swords dating to the 1200s. In addition to the permanent exhibits and the Year of the Tiger exhibit, we got to see the special exhibit on Dogu—Japanese clay figures that date to as far back as 4,000 B.C.—which included three National Treasures!!
